David Duchovny: From X-Files to Good Pooper in 8 Years

The hit TV show X-Files (1993 - 2002) vaulted David Duchovny into stardom as Fox Mulder, a handsome conspiracy-theorist FBI agent partnered with skeptical foil Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson).

X-Files won 16 Emmy awards and 5 Golden Globes, in addition to a slew of other television industry kudos and nominations.

Eight years later, Duchovny is doing voice acting for dog food commercials. What happened? Here's the voice of agent Mulder now:
"My food promotes optimum stool quality. Now I'm not just a good pooper, but an optimum one."

How did David go from sci-fi scoop to Pedigree poop? Following X-Files, Duchovny went on to star in movies, TV shows, hosted Saturday Night Live twice... and in 2008 entered rehab for sex addiction. Has his celebrity fortune suffered so much since then that he's now reduced to peddling dog food to pay the bills?

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

In fact, if you ask any actor who's done both TV/film and voice acting work, they'll tell you that voice-acting is indeed the gravy train: No long hours, no all-night work, no staying in hotels or living in trailers and dealing with autograph-seeking fans on set. No memorizing scripts, no rehearsing blocking and lines. Reading script into an off-camera microphone is so easy for experienced film actors that even a modest fee is tempting, and the project is often fun:

Aside: Fans of the X-Files might remember seeing references to agent Fox Mulder's possible affinity for pornography in some episodes. Did writer/producer Chris Carter write these scenes into the show based on Duchovny's reputation on the set? Foreshadowing later events?
