Hack from the Past: Coin-Operated Speed Queen Washing Machines

With a keen eye and fifty cents I netted this gem at a garage sale which only true geeks can appreciate:

The seller explained it's the programming guide for the vendor computer inside Speed Queen coin-operated washing machines back in the 1980s. The guide provides technicians with codes they can use to calibrate and test the machines, or reprogram the cost required per use:

It's also an historic collection of the first software Easter eggs:
1. Open and close the service door. 2. Press and hold NORMAL, then press HOT.
Who would have guessed that Maytag repairmen were performing Nintendo game cheats 10 years before the system hit the market?

UPDATE - page 13, by request:

hah, i just moved into an apt complex using old old old speed queens and I believe the only button on them says normal...although this may be the dryer...gonna see if I can mess with the programming, wish I could find the manuals for them and make em free

any chance you could post page 13?

thanks

Thanks a lot. I overlooked that the tumbler needs a different code to enter special mode.. You don't need to scan the whole page, but if you could post the button combo for special mode on page 11, that would be greatly appreciated.

The codes for the washers work perfectly for 2 of the 4 (identical) washers in my building. Not sure why the other two don't work. The dryers seem to be the right kind, but we'll see. Great find.

Entering the Special Mode -Tumbler-

Note: Tumbler must be in "Ready" mode. Make sure no coins have been entered and the control is not in an active cycle.

1. Open and close the service door.

2. Press and hold HIGH TEMP, then press MED TEMP

3. SPC will appear.

To exit: Make sure service door has been opened and closed in the last four minutes. Press and hold HIGH TEMP, then press MED TEMP pads twice. Control returns to "Ready" mode.

I wonder if there was any chance the newer coin-only speed queens had a similar code system and if so how could one hack it. I live in a dorm and i think 1.50 is ridiculous for a washing cycle and even more so the same for a drying cycle

Hi, any idea how to hack one of those really traditional speed queen washing machines. I've just moved into a new flat which is equipped with a real old speed queen washing machine. The washing machine doesn't have any buttons but those rotary knobs..

I just tried this on a card operated speed queen dryer and was able to get it to work on 3 out of 5 dryers. Haven't tried a washer yet but in order to get the dryers to work I actually had to unplug them and then replug them first. Also don't mess with the price there is AnP which allow you to run it that one time for free.

? How can you unplug the coin part of the washer and still use it..

Hi there,

While this is happening, these same individuals pull out their spring and summer clothing from storage. Since all of this clothing has been in storage during fall and winter they will also add to the washing and drying load. As you can see, all of this adds up to a really good month for the coin laundry business.Read more at-Coin laundromats in Toronto

Hello dear guys,

The area and neighborhood is the most important thing to consider when building a laundromat business. The best laundromats in Toronto are as hard to find as a missing sock. There are thousands of them in the city, and most are destined to ruin your clothes sooner or later (probably sooner). But laundromats force us into the uneasy choice of convenience over quality, so we take our chances with unreliable washers and unclean dryers simply because we can walk over to the place in our pyjamas.Read more at-:Toronto laundromat services

Hi...If you do not have the time to visit the location there are laundry delivery services that will offer to pick up and drop off the laundry when it has been cleaned and folded. Regularly customers setup a recurring delivery schedule and can even just leave the bag outside so that it seemingly disappears when dirty only to reappear in a few days cleaned and folded. To know more details see-TORONTO COIN LAUNDROMAT

Hello guys
Early this cold Thursday morning I met Alex at his premises on Queen Street East and got an introduction to this unusual business. When Alex bought the laundromat in 2002 it was outdated and dingy, so Alex got to work and replaced almost half the washers and dryers with new high-efficiency machines. He also put the place through a complete cosmetic overhaul and brightened it up considerably.see more at:-Toronto Laundromats
